Spookyghost with Suzanne Vega at NPR tiny desk concert

Before heading out on our current European tour, Suzanne and I went down to Washington to play for Bob Boilen at NPR.

Bob does a very cool show called “Tiny Desk”.

It has a very impromptu feel and we set up and play without any PA.

The only microphones used are to record with and so Suzanne had to just sing in the room acoustically. It meant that I had play at a whisper volume so as not to overpower her. Bob wanted me to bring my normal touring rig as he had seen us play a bunch of times; so it was like trying to balance an elephant on a pin, to try to “rock” quietly in the corner.

It ended up being alot of fun. We had just come from playing a ball in Brattislavia Slovakia where Suzanne had to hit a huge gong whilst wearing a ball gown , to launch the arts festival in Slovakia.

So when I saw the tiny gong on Bobs desk, I encouraged her to hit it before our set. you can hear me murmur that it “makes me feel hungry…”. I guess there are gongs and there are gongs …this one was more like the dinner bell !

Anyhow I hope you enjoy. We play Luka, Crack In The Wall, I Never Wear White, and Toms Diner.

NPR says ….

February 10, 2014 Performing at the NPR Music offices, the inventive folk-music veteran bookends a four-song set with her hits “Luka” and “Tom’s Diner.” But she also plays two terrific new songs, from album called Tales From the Realm of the Queen of Pentacles, that sound as sharp as anything she’s done.

Spookyghost says …

And may I add, I have never played quieter in my life , except for during the last set of power outages …

Review: Suzanne Vega, Royal Concert Hall

Review: Suzanne Vega, Royal Concert Hall

 Posted: February 07, 2014

By Sean Hewitt

But even at her most stripped-down, she’s always looked forward. Her completely a capella 1987 sing Tom’s Diner was bolted to a dance track by UK producers DNA and the result was both her biggest hit and the gateway to the beats and electronica on subsequent albums. The track was also used as a test when audio boffins were creating the first MP3, placing Vega – albeit indirectly – at the creation of the technology that, for good or ill, defines pop’s current digital era.

She’s been away for a few years but she’s back with a sharp new album and a show once again as hi-tech as it is traditional.

At the Royal Concert Hall, she’s backed by just one musician – guitarist Gerry Leonard, also known as ambient musician Spooky Ghost and as David Bowie’s musical director (he plays on Heathen, Reality and last year’s blockbusting The Next Day). Leonard produced and co-wrote Vega’s new songs and his beautifully judged guitar parts, coupled with his total command of digital delay and electronic effects, boggled the mind – to the extent that, as Vega admitted, some think the tour uses pre-recorded backing tracks.

But no, this was all real time. And it was the perfect match for the stunning songs from the new – somewhat unfortunately titled – record, Tales From The Realm Of The Queen Of Pentacles (US bookstore chain Barnes & Noble is playing the album in its shops – except for one track, which contains the words “virgin” and “bastard”, as in illegitimate child; “It made me wish I’d called the album Virgins And Bastards,” she joked, as if that wasn’t 100 times better).

Anyway, the dynamic duo started as they meant to go on, leaping straight in with Vega’s brilliant first hit, Marlene On The Wall, her acoustic playing powering the song to a surging crescendo as Leonard piled on chordal drama as well as a lovely, delicate solo.

The new material was top notch, easily the match of anything she’s done. The stark Song Of The Stoic – about a man looking back at his life as he nears its end, she explained – was haunting and touching. Jacob And The Angel and Fool’s Complaint would have been highlights of any record made at the height of her fame. But best of all were the vertiginous, complex and funny Don’t Uncork What You Can’t Contain and I Never Wear White, the confrontational number that upset Barnes & Noble but is also her most convincing, full-blooded rock song.

At the end, Leonard layered his guitar to produce drones, percussive beats, basslines and fabulous electronic ornamentation on a dramatically reconfigured Tom’s Diner that gave the number a new life for the 21st century. It was the real deal. She’s been away too long.

“Luka” Acoustic Guitar Solo for Radio

So here we are again …

I am on this crazy road trip throughout Europe right now with Suzanne Vega and our crew of two, Mark and Phil.

Suzanne has a new record out called “Tales from the Realm of the Queen of Pentacles”

Because there is a new record out we have a pretty hectic schedule of not only proper shows but almost everyday we have to pop into a radio station or TV station to do quick acoustic versions of the songs. We play one or two new songs but also invariably we get asked to play the hits like “Luka”.

I found myself having to workout an acoustic version of “Luka” so we could easily do these quick hits without us having to slug all of our touring equipment in and out of these radio stations.

The solo was the challenge here , to find something with the structure of the melody but keeping it full sounding at the same time.

Here is what I came up with …

Filmed in the Van by Mark Dyde our super tech on his iPhone 5S.

Hope you guys enjoy.

How to play “I Never Wear White” by Suzanne Vega

So here we are again …

I was inspired the other night after a Suzanne Vega show in Germany, a guy came up to me at the signing and asked where he could find the chords to the new songs. Maybe he liked the songs or maybe he wanted to start his own band and beat us to the punch …

But either way it got me thinking about how to share the knowledge so I , along with Mark Dyde our super-tech started to improvise.

Suzanne had a radio promo date in Saarbrucken Germany that started out asking for two songs acoustically , then one song, then none …

So whilst sitting around in the van while Phil Sullivan, our tour manager and Suzanne were off in the radio station doing the radio interview, Mark and I got busy in the van and thru Marks ingenuity we shot this impromptu video on his iPhone 5. We added a fretboard shot from his fancy camera and Mark edited all together on his laptop.

By the way, you will see that Suzanne and Phil came back before we could finish, so Mark and I decided to do the last section outside the roadside cafe in France on the way to Paris for our next Radio date.

Well, it keeps us off the streets …and what could be safer

Hope you guys enjoy.

Got it ? I hope you rock it !
